East Midlands NHS Innovative Team Win National Award

A Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust project to develop a novel surgical tool for use in cataract surgery has not only been highly commended recently at the Da Vinci Health Technology Innovation Awards held at Loughborough University but has also gone on to win a prestigious National award.

The project won the Medical Devices, category of the National NHS Innovation Awards held on 3rd December at the Magic Circle, London.
Mr Andrew Gibbs, of Warwick Design Limited was there to receive the award on behalf of the team, together with Dr Lisa Banks, Innovations Manager from NHS Innovations East Midlands. Also in attendance were Dr Nicola Bailey and Dr Sharron Bennet from the Wellcome Trust.

Consultant ophthalmologist John Stokes, innovator of the device worked with NHS Innovations East Midlands to determine the business potential and the team then called upon the development services of product design partners Warwick Design.

They received a huge financial boost when the project successfully obtained a Wellcome Trust Translational Award of £300,000, the first to be awarded solely to an NHS Trust.

This particular project truly reflects the great potential of project collaborations between the NHS, industry and organisations such as the Wellcome Trust.
