Why outstanding leadership is vital

Achieving our shared ambition for putting quality at the heart of everything we do will require a renewed focus on leadership at all levels of the NHS. Making change actually happen takes leadership. As set out in the High Quality Care for All report, fostering and developing leadership that recognises the importance of high quality care is central to our expectations for the future NHS. Good leaders already exist at every level in many parts of the NHS, but making this the standard will require a significant shift in both our thinking and our actions. We are committed to spreading best practice, fostering good leadership at every level and recognising the best leaders for today and tomorrow.

The new NHS Leadership Awards scheme

There are many examples of outstanding leadership in the NHS locally, regionally and nationally. Our new awards scheme aims to recognise these outstanding leaders across England and at every level.

The scheme is aligned to the National Leadership Council and will complement their aims and commitments by encouraging future leaders from all backgrounds, reflecting the diverse communities served by the NHS.

The awards aim to recognise outstanding leadership through seven categories:

The NHS Leader of the Year
The NHS Mentor of the Year
The NHS Partner of the Year
The NHS Quality Champion of the Year
The NHS Change Leader of the Year
The NHS Innovator of the Year
The NHS Award for Inspiration

Showcasing your nominations

Sharing Best Practice is central to the NHS Leadership Awards Scheme. All short-listed nominations will be digitally showcased over the summer.

Outline of the scheme

Nominations are peer-to-peer

The awards scheme is an exciting opportunity for you to nominate one of your peers for the most prestigious health awards in the country. If one of your peers has shown outstanding leadership in one of the categories then you should think about nominating them.

Scheme for individuals

The scheme is for individuals only except for the NHS Partner of the Year, which is open to teams and organisations.

Eligibility

The NHS Leadership Awards Scheme is open to everyone working for, or on behalf of, the NHS in England.

You will be able to make a nomination from March to Friday 15 May inclusive.
