Maria Thornton, Assistant Director R&D at one of the UK's largest Strategic Health Authorities, NHS North West, is to join the Strategic Advisory Board at Government Interrelations.
The Advisory Board provides a strategic overview of Government Interrelations activity and advises on Government Interrelations developments Maria said 'the North West is a microcosm, so we can transfer to other areas in the UK and take the learning from the North West to other locations' The challenge, as she points out, is how do we engage all trusts in research, in other words how do we encourage non active R&D to become active.Maria has extensive knowledge around the government paper Best Research, Best Health and the North West is pioneering the way with its Exemplar Project. She has been instrumental in encouraging how we translate findings out of academics into the NHS and is interested in keeping NHS researchers focused on NHS priorities. She continues stating 'the big issue is getting research into practice rather than sitting on the shelf and linking them into the 8 clinical pathway groups'. Once more, the UK and the North West will be leading the world on behalf of UK Plc to be leaders in clinical trials, which will undoubtedly impact on Translational Medicine and Personalised Medicine.
