The quality objectives set by ‘High Quality Care for All’ will only be met by enhancing and developing our ability to adopt and share innovation. This is why Lord Darzi’s report promised extra funds and support for innovation throughout the NHS, to augment the wealth of exciting projects which are already underway. Similarly, the only way we are going to meet the challenges of a strained economy is through innovation and by improving quality. Innovation will be driven regionally by Strategic Health Authorities, who now have a legal duty to promote and reward innovation. NHS North West’s vision is to create a culture where innovation is expected, supported and celebrated.  A new regional infrastructure will enable the formation of strong partnerships between the NHS, industry, NGO’s and academia, helping to develop solutions, pilots and evaluate new technology. Service innovation will also be strongly supported in this new structure.

North West Exemplar Programme

The North West Exemplar Programme aims to demonstrate the improved clinical trial performance that is possible when the NIHR Clinical Research Network works closely with partners in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and across the NHS

The NIHR CRN is tasked with developing a world-class infrastructure to ensure that high-quality research funded by both commercial and non-commercial organisations receives the support it needs to succeed.

Such support will include investment in the expansion of dedicated clinical research staff within the NHS, and the development of standard procedures to ensure consistent best practice at network study sites through both study set up and conduct.

The NIHR CRN CC has established a dedicated Industry team to address the specific challenges and pressures faced by the healthcare industry in successfully delivering their research and development projects through the NHS. The NIHR CRN CC Industry team is working closely with the healthcare industries, the Department of Health, and NHS Trusts in identifying barriers to the delivery of clinical research in the UK, and formulating solutions and strategies to overcome these
