DH NHS UK-wide NHS Innovations Director Joins Government Interrelations Print E-mail

Maire Smith was instrumental in establishing the UK-wide NHS Innovations network working at the public/private interface. This had a dual purpose to manage ideas and IP from NHS employees and to encourage industry to work with the NH Strategic Health Authorities nationally. She led a number of key initiatives in both business incubation and healthcare. Maire had major responsibility for the Department of Health’s Innovation Agenda, passed to the SHAs by Darzi in his Next Stage Review, which Government Interrelations have been leading on the mapping exercise for the North West SHA for some time now.

Prior to working as a Director in the DH & NHS, she was CEO of Manchester Innovation Ltd and the Manchester Incubator which subsequently became the University companies UMIP and UMIC.

Initially trained as a scientist, she held a variety of roles in medical research, strategic marketing and business development in Glaxo Wellcome.

“I am delighted to join the Strategic Advisory Board to assist in the growth of this high energy and enthusiastic company. Thinking strategically and enabling innovation are major drivers in the Governments agenda today and I recognise these qualities and synergies in Government Interrelations who have a much needed can-do mentality'

Maire Smith will be working alongside the other high profile board members to develop a strategy specifically tailored for Hospitals and Trusts to set up spin off companies like Universities have done for some time. By developing business strategies for joint ventures between industry, academic and healthcare organisations to work in interdependent relations the NHS can as Lord Drayson said become more commercially minded and develop alternative revenue streams.
